The country’s least-educated whites are now expected to live four years less than they were two decades ago. Demographics is one way to look at life expectancy; geography is another. Aaron Carroll posts this map that looks at where women’s life expectancy is going up – and where it’s dropping. The red areas show a decrease, while all others show some level of an increase. The counties with decreasing life expectancy for women tend to cluster in the central and southeast parts of the country, with a few rural counties out west as well. The areas are by and large rural and lower income. They also tend to be areas with fewer doctors, likely meaning less access to the health care resources available elsewhere in the country. washingtonpost.com
