Jurgis, your guess is correct, I need the landline for international calls (call and receive calls). Skype does not work, since none of my parents (most of my international calls are with family) have a computer or internet.
My brother got an ipad last year, so we use facetime since then, which works great.

My guess is that most people keep the landline because of inertia, but for how long is this going to continue? This is important for landline companies like FTR and CTL, because landline and high speed internet are their only revenue source. On top of that, the price for plain landline have been rising, despite the fact that disconnects are rising. Sounds like the ATT, VZ and CTL's are trying to milk this cash cow as much as possible, before it disappears. I think it will disappear quicker in the future, because simple alternatives are available, that offer a substitution. I think the alarm services will not need landline in the future either, with customers doing their monitoring over smartphones or internet.
