Hi one_less: As far as collecting unemployment after voluntarily losing a job, and generally working the unemployment rules, I've seen plenty of that.

I've also seen a good bit of working the rules on pay for "injured" workers.

The way the government sets things up, it's just a lot easier for the company to pay.

That is, the person who actually ends up paying for this sort of fraud, (i.e. the stock owner and, arguably, corporate management) really isn't in a position to do anything about it.

The guy responsible for enforcing this sort of thing has a much easier life if he doesn't get involved with a pissing match against an unemployed person who has lots of time on his hands to file forms and plenty of time to think of excuses and legal arguments.

It's just easier all around if the mid level management / personnel department simply agrees that the employee was laid off instead of fired or quit.

And little companies, where there is a closer connection between who makes the decisions and who pays the bills, for them everyone in the company knows about the legal fight. Why make an ugly scene with an ex employee who a lot of your current employees know and like? It's just a lot better for all involved to let the State pay the extra unemployment / workmen's compensation.

The only cost to the company is (possibly) a slight increase in their future unemployment / workmen's compensation rates.
