Lots of tradition going back centuries.

Nice to see a Jesuit elected. They're the best.

Not that we'll ever find out, but I'm wondering what was in that report that caused Benedict to "resign." It had to be more than the sex scandals and Vatican-leaks. Clearly he was forced out and basically put in prison. They white-washed it pretty nicely. Just focused on reelecting a new pope and that the old pope will live in humility and meditate.

When you compare it to other leaders stepping down or being termed out, they are included, not excluded. The old pope will never be seen in public again. He wasn't part of electing a new pope. He didn't appear with the new pope. He had all his perks taken away - all his luxury - all his power. They locked him away in a monastery and put him in isolation. He has guards when he's let out for a walk. And they burned everything connected with him - all his robes, clothes, shoes, hats, papers and his ring. Name a criminal who's been treated like that.
