Yes, my pay rate in 1970 was low compared with USA wages. I was doing odd jobs at the time. Driving a van, manual labouring and whatnot, though being a temporary wharfie was a good lurk earning big money at about $2 an hour or some such.

Measurements such as CPI-U measure what they do. "Inflation" needs definition before deciding how to measure it. Some treat money dilution as being inflation. Others measure various price increases, adjusted for hedonics and the fact that a computer now is not the same as a computer back then.

Going to live in Canada was great. That doubled our pay [wife and self] and disposable income was 10 times our NZ pay after paying for accommodation, food and basics.
