Avoid ASND, NT buyout is a Counter Rumor

ASND will simply meet expectations,
and is slated to lose more current
system proposals. NT rumor started
to get insiders out of ASND before
more bad news hits. STAY AWAY !!!

Yo, chix, take this: 15:25 ET ******

ASCEND COMMUNICATIONS (ASND) 27 +3 3/8. Among the ten most active stocks
trading on the Nasdaq, this maker of networking access products is on the move this afternoon
on very little news. While the stock has given back some of the price gains it had posted earlier in
the session, the price run-up seems to be partly short-covering related. The stock has been on a
decisive downtrend since August when it traded around $55 a share. But this was before the
company started to miss earnings estimates as Ascend has been hurt by the consolidation taking
place in the Internet service access provider arena which has led to lower demand for its
products. Subsequently, the stock has languished in the mid-$20s area for the past month on
concerns that the problems in Asia would only depress sales and earnings further. But, with today's
upward move, there seems to be more than just short covering driving the stock higher. Estimates
for the current quarter call for ASND to earn $0.23 a share, versus year-ago net of $0.32, and a
profit of $0.20 a share in the 3Q. Given projections for a profit of $1.16 a share in 1998, the stock
currently trades at a forward multiple of 23.
