I'll see if I can find the section of Maudlins book that is (discussed), but from memory they were instruments like credit derivative swaps, credit default swaps, swf hedge, and several other acronyms I did not understand. :)

His point was that money flowed in and out of these effecting velocity. Now that 2008-9 collapse removed many of them, the velocity of money is in steeper decline.

My take... The globe is awash w/ trillions and trillions of dollars sitting idle looking for yield.
