New zirconium developments for the new year

New capacity additions in the zirconium industry are not all that frequent, but in the last few months there have been a number of interesting developments.

The Narvik baddeleyite processing plant in Norway is now on-stream. The plant has a capacity of 3,000 metric tons per year, and full production is expected to be achieved by the end of 1998. The
plant is a joint venture between BM Trading (45 percent). Kovdor Mining (30 percent) and Cookson Group (25 percent). Kovdor provides the baddeleyite feed as a by-product of mining apatite and magnetitie on the Kola Peninsula in Russia. The plant will produce calcium-stabilized and monoclininc zirconias.

A new $1.5-million micronised zirconia plant is being opened at Chavara, India, by Indian Rare Earths Ltd.. The plant will produce 500 tons per year of opacifier-grade zirconia under the trade
name Microzir for use in glazes. Capacity is expected to increase to 1,200 tons per year in due course.

Southern Mining Corp. of South Africa has acquired a half share in 3R Minerals of Texas, which owns a very large deposit of zircon in Utah containing an estimated 20 million tons of high-quality
zircon. And in Morocco, Aminsa of Spain has signed an agreement with a government agency to develop a zircon-bearing mineral sands deposit near Geulmin on the Atlantic coast.
