Here's an excerpt off the NRID thread, regarding networked solutions to computer security:

"The truth of the matter though is that security is not really such a
big deal in most cases. Some companies are really paranoid, and rightfully
so about external access, but in the case of an NT domain you're talking
about internal use and controlling physical access to the machines is
a better form a security. If NRID's solution came built in I bet people
would be falling over themselves to use it, but not when they have to
pay extra for it."

I think that IDX is aiming at a more "built-in" solution as the Holy Grail, using inexpensive scanner chips with appropriate optics, a smart card reader, and pre-supplied or plug-in IDX software. I'd prefer to see the scanner on the keyboard or the mouse rather than free standing on the desk, but I haven't seen IDX move there yet.
