Max Nigh, I am aware of a few fortune 500 companies that are converting their data bases to Oracle in order to solve their Y2k problem. The work I know of has been going on for a couple of years and will continue through 1999. Oracle is getting applications and consultant revenue from this activity.

The bears seem to be in charge here, happens to Oracle every quarter. Time will tell what happens.

Oracle is not a y2k provider in the classic sense. You can not substitute a database engine for cobol code. Just like you can't substitute a filing cabinet to solve a poor typesetting problem. (Sorry about the weak analogy, but cobol code and database engines aren't relevant to each other either.)

However, Oracle and other application vendors like SAP, Baan and PSFT are benefiting from those organizations that want to replace their legacy enterprise applications running on mainframes with high end y2k compliant client server systems. Oracle may also sell a databse engine to those customers using other vendors apps. I expect this temporary stimulation of business to continue through the next few quarters and begin to slow down in the 2nd half of 1998. If Oracle DOESN'T put up a fabulous application number this quarter, look out. My sense is that things are fine and that we should see a sigh of relief with good results and a good conference call.
