All of the above. It has been said(technically incorrectly, but...) that the Right suffers from a severe case of epistemic closure. Technically speaking it is really confirmation bias, but that term doesn't really encompass what is happening. While it is perfectly normal to do this to a certain extent, the Right has crafted their own parallel universe with their own vocabulary, 'facts', media and even schools. While there is always a fringe across the spectrum, the Right started to amp things up during the 1980s. One reason is it seems there is a lot of money in it. And the more outrage they can stoke, the more money there is to be made. Because they have pretty complete coverage of the various tools people would use to fact check, there is no real pressure to open things up to reality. So the meme that the Newtown police took 20 minutes to respond to the Sandy Hook shootings is reality, despite the transcripts which show a completely different story being available for months. So they live in a totally different America from the rest of us. One where we are just a single world event from Mad Max. Or the black helicopters, I can't help but notice that harris is prattling along those lines. Or maybe Obama's Negro Army rounding whites up for the concentration camps. If you deeply believed that there was a massive conspiracy that a faceless horde was moments away from taking control of your life, then a few innocents being killed by people with an even looser grasp of reality is but a small price to pay...
