Poll: Support for stricter gun control wanes

Poll analysis by Sarah Dutton, Jennifer De Pinto, Anthony Salvanto and Fred Backus

Soon after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., announced an assault weapons ban would not be part of a gun control bill, a new CBS News poll shows support for stricter gun control laws overall has dropped since the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Currently, support for stricter gun control laws stands at 47 percent today, down from a high of 57 percent just after the shootings. Thirty-nine percent want those laws kept as they are, and another 11 percent want them made less strict.

Partisans hold different views on gun control laws: 52 percent of Republicans want the laws kept as they are, while 66 percent of Democrats want stricter laws (down from 78 percent in February). Half of gun owners themselves want gun laws overall kept as they are, but a quarter call for stricter laws.

Women (55 percent) are more likely than men (39 percent) to want stricter laws, as are those living in the Northeast. Only 44 percent in the Midwest and South want stricter laws; 47 percent in the West.

Paul, Cruz, Lee to Block Gun Control Legislation

breitbart.com

by Mike Flynn 25 Mar 2013 148 post a comment View Discussion

Sens. Paul, Cruz and Lee have signaled that they will block the Senate from moving to any consideration of gun control legislation. On Monday, the three Senators sent a letter to Majority Leader Reid which read in part, “We will oppose the motion to proceed to any legislation that will serve as a vehicle for any additional gun restrictions.” It is further confirmation that the three are providing the only opposition to Obama's big-government agenda.

Majority Leader Reid has orchestrated the gun legislation to provide maximum benefit to vulnerable Dem Senators in red states. He has stripped most meaningful measures out of the underlying bill, providing Democrats on opportunity to vote against amendments that contain the most sweeping gun control legislation.

The action by Sens. Paul, Cruz and Lee call out the lie on this legislative sleight-of-hand. They have chosen to block any consideration of any gun control legislation. If the GOP caucus follows them, the Senate will never proceed to consideration of gun control legislation.

If the action of Paul, Cruz and Lee prevails, the Senate will never proceed to consideration of the bill or the underlying amendments. The action of these three provides a real opposition. Senators like McCain and Graham should move to the sidelines. New leaders are ready to fight for liberty.

If Republicans insist on cutting government spending, what wrong with cutting something like White House tours - that don't contribute to anyone's health or welfare? If assholes like Trump want to help, let them fund meals for pre-schoolers or seniors that have also been cut. If he wants to do it with class, have him do it anonymously. He's just after attention, which you clowns are showering on him.

Why is that hard for you regressives to see?
