"Grapes of Wrath is a terrific analogy" The big difference is that there are safety nets now. So "rockbottom" is higher now than it used to be. Take away the nets and people will go back to fighting tooth and nail over day-labor jobs that pay just enough per day to buy food for the day for you and maybe one other person. Now, most people just give up and sit in the net in a depressed torpor instead of going at each other with baseball bats and whatnot in what amounted to a struggle over food.
