60 degrees north should give continuous coverage. 70 degrees north should give reasonable coverage [with a view to the south - not with big trees or mountains looming to the south]. There are few people north of 65 degrees.

If you mean in the last 7 years, so many satellites had died that you would have had bad coverage [elsewhere too].

The Alaska gateway improved service way up north. I take it you don't mean in the north of Asia.

Where there is already cellphone coverage you wouldn't need Globalstar coverage unless the roaming charges are too high which they often are. When terrestrial services are over-loaded or out of action, it's also useful to have Globalstar. SPOT is also excellent and Iridium doesn't do it. Not to mention Iridium is dying so give it another year or two and lets hear how good Iridium coverage is.

Yes, if Amerindians paddle their kayaks to Nigeria to hunt whales, they should take an Iridium phone, not Globalstar. But we were discussing Indians in north America. Yes, on transoceanic trips Iridium is better than Globalstar too. For now.

Globalstar was intended for places where there is no terrestrial coverage, but because terrestrial roaming prices are so high, it could be more economical to use Globalstar. Except that Globalstar roaming has been expensive too - maybe it still is. Now that Globalstar owns most gateways, it probably is not.
