I mis-counted... I have 5 MLPs plus KMR and KMI. 3 of my MLPs are in taxable, 2 in IRA, KMR and KMI in IRA.

I am so tired of the MLP discussions I've been reading here and at iV that I may follow roni and simply get rid of all of them and just keep KMR and KMI. The biggest impediment to that is my inability to come up with 5 decent replacements for them, especially if I replace all of them with IRA positions for the DGI PF.

My taxable acct. for now is more about swing trading than retirement income, with the exception of the MLPs in it. I suppose the MLPs are not a problem in the taxable as long as I hold them until I die and they then reset when transferred to my heir(s), but as I said, I'm burnt out on this topic and may just take the easy route by avoiding the sector altogether... dang... MLPs have been some of my best performers in any acct.

"I figure the biggest reasons people insist on putting them in the IRA is because they can't afford to fund an IRA and a taxable account."

I have both.

"Those that have MLP's in an IRA and can afford a taxable account are too lazy to switch".

Not true at least in my case.

"For those who hold IRA's and taxable accounts, I don't understand the resistance to just put MLP's where they were designed to go"

I don't understand why those who "think they know" worry about people who don't do things the way they think they should.

People should worry about paying their own taxes, and I'll worry about not paying mine.

I don't understand all the fear ot the tax man if it does come to that.

MLPs a couple thoughts. I own plenty in taxable accounts, they have been and are a tremendous investment: a utility-like dividend with a growth kicker. A growing, regulated, monopolistic entity. Arguably, does it get any better than that? Well worth owning and paying an accountant if you don't want to deal with the K1s, which is what I do.

I also own modest amounts in IRAs and on the advice of a gray hair I swap positions every couple years: sell the shares in one IRA and buy them in another. This resets any recapture totals and keeps them from accumulating.

Just what I do for better or worse. I do think MLPs have been historically undervalued due to their perceived tax complications ... Which makes them a perpetually attractive investment compared to many alternatives.
And will probably continue to be so.
