Hi Brumar89; Yeah the slave ownership rate was quite low. My recollection of the data is that there were always a *LOT* more white people than blacks (which of course ignores white indentured servitude and free blacks). But by the time we've gone back that many generations, we have huge numbers of ancestors.

I got to thinking about this whole thing and it occurred to me that the parts of the country where the white folk have the highest percentage of minority blood just happen to be the same parts where the white voters vote Republican at very high rates.

Recent "eurotrash" immigrants tend to vote Democratic. Their relatives back in Europe started and ran the Socialist, Nazi and Communist parties and now are far to the left of the US republican party. Europeans put up with gun laws.

So why is it that the US republican party is any different? Maybe one explanation is all that Pocahontas blood. Native Americans lived free in societies where all men were expected to be proficient with weapons. And in wars where mongrel US "white" people went up against Europeans we kicked their asses.

Maybe part of that is due to the fact that the early settlers in the colonies were braver, stronger and more freedom loving than the people they left behind. But some of that may be due to the nature of the Indians they bred with.

Here's a nice article about what happened to most of the Native American population (they ended up reclassified as "white" after enough mixing). It's nice because it goes into great detail with maps of haplogroup percentages, etc. One problem with it is that it's too much focused on y-chromosome stuff (because it's supposed to correlate with last name):

Where have all the Indians gone

Cultural eradication meant becoming Christian, “white”, and “not different”. Fort Christanna and other locations often removed Native children from their parents in order to “educate” them. In some cases, the “Indians” were already admixed to a degree that becoming white meant a change of clothes and sometimes a change of address. Many examples exist of families “becoming white” during the westward migration.

P.S. I should link in Indian Heritage Month at the US Department of Defense. These are Americans with very large amounts of Indian blood. They ended up with a lot of medals of honor, compared to the percentage of the population that is Indian:
