You can buy a super-reliable Garmin eTrex 10 for about $100 and when you leave your vehicle mark a waypoint and when you are finished picking berries, mushrooms etc. look up the waypoint. Always keep a couple of fresh batteries with you and you should never have a problem. I know people that use and like Spot. An eTrex or Spot will not do much good if you encounter a bear.

Good footwear with soles that grip and don't slip is a good idea. A Swedish Fire Steel to help spark a fire is a great companion. A Buck knife and Fiskar axe come in handy because they both stay sharp and rust free without a lot of filing. Extra water, a compass, map and first aid kit with plenty of pain killers and vet wrap and extra gauze are more important than eTrex or Spot.

When I go on a long hike I always have a couple of Pepsi's and some sugar to add so I can jet out the last couple of kilometres. For shorter hikes a good India Pale Ale is a good hydrator.
