If you didn't see this, or you can listen to it with the tab on the top right...

This story on getting people onto disability is a jaw dropper to me. I remember looking at the growth of teh disability rolls a while back, wondering why they were growing so quickly.

"prosecuted to the full extent of the law" I couldn't agree more. Sad state of personal morals.

Once had a 59 year old truck driver working for me that had a bad auto accident when in his early twenties.
Gouged a chunk out of the side of his lower leg, down to the bone. I had never heard of an infection that would
never heal. When he was older it took him a year and a half to find a doctor that would replace his hip. All the
others said the infection would spread to his hip. He unwrapped his leg one day and showed it to me.
I thought I was going to be sick. It was two or so inches each way, and down to the bone. He had to clean and
redress the thing morning and night as it oozed constantly. His doctors told him to go on disability, but he wouldn't.
Truck drivers as a whole aren't a jovial bunch, but this guy was. I could always tell when he was coming toward my office by his whistling.

For reasons I don't know, he drove up into the mountains about two years ago, got out of the car, and blew his brains out.

Had an aunt go on disability for her heart from the Pa. State lottery. Didn't stop her drinking, she was an alcoholic, or dent her serious gambling problem.
She also worked some cash jobs, waitressing and bartending. When she died she had her credit cards maxed out, but thought that since they were only in
her name, her husband wouldn't be held liable. Wrong.

This is one reason I am behind our Governor privatizing our lottery.

OT Re: Federal Disability Program - Annual expenditure $225B!

Wow, after listening to this "This American Life" on NPR, I was shocked to hear the details on SSDI payments. This program is out of control.

The number of Americans receiving federal disability payments has nearly doubled over the last 15 years. There are towns and counties around the nation where almost 1/4 of adults are on disability. Planet Money's Chana Joffe-Walt spent 6 months exploring the disability program, and emerges with a story of the U.S. economy quite different than the one we've been hearing
It's well worth the time to listen to this three part series. 1 in 4 in Alabama is on Federal disability.

We need to fix this.
