nah I don't think so. any more choice then stock funds, bond funds and cash for the "average" person is a recipe for 401k gambling. Let those that actually can save money outside 401k's have real choices. I cant bear supporting a whole group of 401k losers whining about how the market took all their money and they need it back. what is it 80% of people retiring have SS as their major source of income, what you want to increase that?

"That is what I dislike about the 401k system, you have no control of the investment choices."

I retired in '06. Is what you said something brand new?

My employer had a 401k plan with Vanguard and we could buy any fund they had or we could use their brokerage dept. and buy virtually any other fund or any stock, or whatever. I couldn't have asked for a better plan.

You made a very broad statement. Did the rules change, or does it depend on the particular employer?
