Appro:

I suspected that you were guessing I could be Gary in disguise. I am not. However, I know many on SI who change their personalities and names.

APM appeared to recover just before WDC's pre-announcement which brought down the tech-sector, especially APM. I have watched hence many large blocks of shares on the buy-side. APM management has a policy to keep the WS analysts -- the vultures and crooks (IMO) -- at a bay and so traders are playing by guess.

APM states on its web-site (which is very informative, IMO) that it is producing MR heads in volume and that higher volume production is expected by April 1998. APM also says that they expect to produce mostly MR heads by the end of 1998. A company which is reluctant to disseminate information to a selective gang of analysts has made all relevant information available to everyone who likes to have it. IMHO, the WS analysts are a bunch of idiots: too shallow to understand the technical details and want to be appeased by a CEO. Many CEOs are too eager to pander to the WS analysts, but the APM CEO does not want to do so.

The question, then, is whether APM will continue to be profitable in future? Most of APM staff is in Malaysia whose currency has gone down by 35%; this will generate a lot of savings for APM. If they already produce MR in volume and have recruited top scientists who personally own patents in this technology, why should there be a suspicion? Well, the WS does not understand any of these and wants to hear from the CEO on earnings. This I think is the source of uncertainty, given that the WS has begun disliking tech stocks except for the likes of MSFT.
