U.S. fertilizer maker Mosaic ( MOS) will spend up to a $1 billion over four years on a joint venture in Saudi Arabia to make phosphate fertilizers, animal feed and other related products for customers in Asia and elsewhere.

But fertilizer stocks were down Tuesday after Rentech Nitrogen Partners ( RNF) missed analysts' earnings forecasts for the fourth quarter.

Mosaic on Tuesday said it will partner with Saudi mining and metals company Maaden and Saudi Basic Industries Corp. on the $7 billion project. Mosaic will own 25%, with Maaden controlling 60% and SABIC controlling the last 15%.

The Waad Al Shammal Phosphate Project includes a plant to be built in northern Saudi Arabia and expansion of processing plants in a city on its east coast.

"This cost-effective phosphate project would enable Mosaic to further diversify our sources of phosphates and gives us improved access to key agricultural countries," Mosaic CEO Jim Prokopanko said.

Mosaic shares were down 1.1% intraday to 61.23 in the stock market today. Rentech was off 4.1% to 36.15.

Early Tuesday, Rentech posted adjusted Q4 earnings of 44 cents per unit, up 47% from a year ago, but 11 cents shy of analysts' expectations. Revenue climbed 47% to $92.5 million, topping analyst forecasts for $75.4 million.

Some plant outages and lower prices on some of its fertilizers crimped margins. But its natural-gas price — a key feedstock ingredient — was sharply lower in the quarter.

It guided for cash distribution in 2013 of $2.60 per unit, including the impact from expected outages over the year.

Rival fertilizer maker CF Industries ( CF) slipped 2.6% to 196.87 intraday. Terra Nitrogen ( TNH) was up 0.6% to 220.18 intraday.

CF breaking down.... Will watch for a reversal but last 2 days have taken out previous support.... The bounces have been worth good % moves, every now and then. Careful with this one, not very liquid, imo....
