Traders said telecommunications equipment makers Lucent Technologies Inc (NYSE:LU - news) and Northern Telecom Ltd (Toronto:NTL.TO - news) were seen as possible buyers.

Lucent declined to comment, saying it does not comment on market rumors or speculation as a company policy.

A Lucent spokesman, however, pointed out that Lucent has already announced an acquisition in the data networking arena -- privately held Livingston Enterprises Inc.

Northern Telecom also declined to comment on the Ascend rumors. Ascend could not be reached immediately for comment.

Rumors of the takeover surfaced Thursday in the options market, a trader said. Other market sources said the rumors pegged the takeover price at $35 a share.

''It's buyout rumors. But we've heard them before, so who knows. But they (the rumors) are back,'' one trader said.

Thursday's rumor renewed speculation that circulated on October 17. At that time, Ascend rallied to about 35 a share as market rumors tied Ascend to Lucent.

Ascend, which acquired Cascade Communications in a stock deal earlier this year, has been seen as an acquisition target as its shares have fallen from their year's peak of about 80 a share.

Ascend's gains countered weakness in other networking stocks. Cisco Systems Inc (Nasdaq:CSCO - news) lost 27/32 to 86-1/16. 3Com Corp (Nasdaq:COMS - news) shed 1-6/16 to 33-9/16 and Bay Networks Inc (NYSE:BAY - news) slipped 1-2/16 to 27-13/16.

The American Stock Exchange's networking index gained 1.95 points or 0.67 percent to 293.97.

I dont think the Livingston deal is closed by LU as yet. They probably can back out of it with some penalty payment of a few tens of millions of dollars. Heck, they would be getting close to 600 million in cash from Ascends coffers.
If they can pay $35 for Octel which is in a low growth arena they can bloody well pay $45-50 for Ass-end or get their asses kicked by Mory to go and fetch some more cashola.

As Chi-X would say after some bad-ass whiskey,

There will be no hoola till there is more moola :-)

Enjoy the joy till it lasts but with the finger on the trigger button to bail out, just in case this is yet another Wall Street production.
