I hear you.. I remember initial cost 'guesses' in the 1B range for this building, and who knows if 5B is accurate. If it is, that would seem to be a significant waste of cash, even though AAPL can well afford it, IMO...

It has always seemed to me that this building was "iffy" in terms of what spending Apple's money.
I'm a friend of friend who is intimately involved in this process, and he tells of similar demands that have been very frustrating. It has as much or more to do with the architect (Foster+Partners), as it does with Apple. I have a feeling Jobs gave them free hand and much of this is coming from their kid-in-a-candy shop position.

No one cared before people started worrying about their stock portfolios.

What was once perhaps an overstated design icon, is now seen as raw, unadulterated hubris. Won't be long before machined aluminum phone enclosures and friction-stir welds are thoroughly derided too.
