Associated Press Revises Another Politically Charged Term

Stylebook entry for 'Islamist' revised two days after 'illegal immigrant' dropped

By Steven Nelson April 4, 2013
usnews.com

Following on the heels of the Tuesday decision by The Associated Press to discontinue use of the term "illegal immigrant," the news agency on Thursday revised its stylebook entry for another politically charged term.

The term "Islamist," the AP clarified in a Thursday afternoon alert to online stylebook subscribers, should not be used as "a synonym for Islamic fighters, militants, extremists or radicals."

[ DEFIANT: Some Lawmakers Will Still Say 'Illegal Immigrant’]

"Islamist" is frequently used as a label for conservative Islamic political movements, particularly Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas, the group's Palestinian offshoot. It generally carries a negative connotation.

The AP first added the term to its stylebook in 2012. The definition initially read:

Supporter of government in accord with the laws of Islam. Those who view the Quran as a political model encompass a wide range of Muslims, from mainstream politicians to militants known as jihadi.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations, an American advocacy group sometimes labeled "Islamist" by critics, previously lobbied for the AP to drop the term. In a January op-ed CAIR's communications director, Ibrahim Hooper, wrote the term "has become shorthand for 'Muslims we don't like'" and "is currently used in an almost exclusively pejorative context."

As of Thursday's update, the AP definition reads:

An advocate or supporter of a political movement that favors reordering government and society in accordance with laws prescribed by Islam. Do not use as a synonym for Islamic fighters, militants, extremists or radicals, who may or may not be Islamists.

Where possible, be specific and use the name of militant affiliations: al-Qaida-linked, Hezbollah, Taliban, etc. Those who view the Quran as a political model encompass a wide range of Muslims, from mainstream politicians to militants known as jihadi.

CAIR praised the AP's update. "We believe this revision is a step in the right direction and will result in fewer negative generalizations in coverage of issues related to Islam and Muslims," Hooper said. "The key issue with the term ‘Islamist’ is not its continued use; the issue is its use almost exclusively as an ill-defined pejorative."

[ RELATED: 'Illegal Immigrant' Banished From AP Stylebook]

The AP's decision to discontinue "illegal immigrant" was part of an ongoing process of "ridding the Stylebook of labels," the organization's senior vice president and executive editor, Kathleen Carroll, said in a blog post. It was immediately criticized by opponents of illegal immigration, including Maricopa County, Ariz., Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who told U.S. News he objected to efforts "to soften the crime of entering illegally."

700 Retired Military Special Ops Tell Congress to Form Select Committee on Benghazi

by Kerry Picket 7 Apr 2013
breitbart.com

Seven hundred retired Military Special Operations professionals from the organization "Special Operations Speaks" sent a letter to the House of Representatives urging members to support H.Res 36, which will create a House Select Committee to investigate last September’s deadly terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya. “It appears that many of the facts and details surrounding the terrorist attack which resulted in four American deaths and an undetermined number of American casualties have not yet been ascertained by previous hearings and inquiries,” the letter states. It continues further, "Additional information is now slowly surfacing in the media, which makes a comprehensive bipartisan inquiry an imperative. Many questions have not been answered thus far."

The letter puts forth over twenty unanswered questions the select committee should address.

Congressman Frank Wolf, a sub-committee chairman on the House Appropriations Committee, issued a resolution for a House Select Committee to investigate issues surrounding the Benghazi Attack last November in the 112th Congress. He re-issued his resolution for the select committee when the 113th Congress began. The resolution currently has over 60 co–sponsors.

Only Speaker John Boehner (R–OH) can appoint a Select Committee
and Boehner appears to mainly rely on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence to investigate the Benghazi attack. However, any information that may be garnered from that committee will, as always, remain classified.

"As a retired Special Operations officer who spent most of my thirty-six years preparing for and executing rescue missions to save fellow Americans, I am deeply troubled by the events in Benghazi on September 11, 2012. The men and women who I served with lived by an ethos that pledged to never leave a fallen comrade and to make every effort to respond when a fellow American was threatened. I have seen men take great risks to save a fellow warrior. I have even seen men die trying to do so," wrote General William G. 'Jerry' Boykin in a statement to Breitbart News.

Boykin added, "The lack of accountability regarding the Benghazi event disturbs me greatly and bears the earmarks of a cover up. America is entitled to a full accounting of this egregious attack on our people with some explanation as to why there was no effort to save the Americans in the US Embassy annex and the CIA station, or at least to recover their bodies before they fell into Libyan hands. Our Congress has yet to fulfill its responsibility to provide a complete analysis of the attack or to provide answers as to what exactly happened. A bi-partisan Special Committee is needed to determine the truth about Benghazi."

Last month, Rep. Wolf, along with Reps. Jim Gerlach (R–PA), a House and Ways committee member, sent a letter to Secretary of State John Kerry demanding to know more information on State Department employees who survived the Benghazi attack. In his letter to Kerry, Wolf noted that sources say that as many as 30 survivors of the Benghazi attack were allegedly wounded. Seven of those thirty were said to be critical injuries. Sec. Kerry confirmed he visited an injured Benghazi survivor at Walter Reed.

Rep. Darrell Issa (R - CA), Chairman of the House Oversight Committee, pointed to Kerry's admission as a reason why he expects to speak with Benghazi survivors. “Now that Secretary Kerry has publicly, essentially a Senator, in a post way, has chosen to visit with them, any claim that they’re not available at this point to Congress is unsupportable. And I look forward to oversight by all committees," Issa told Breitbart News.

Since Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R – UT) first told Breitbart News in December that the Obama administration had not been allowing him or any other member of Congress to see Benghazi survivors, more Republican members, including Senators Lindsey Graham (R – S.C.) and John McCain (R – AZ) are calling for survivors to be allowed to testify at hearings on Capitol Hill without fear of legal or career repercussions.

Signers of the letter believe the House Select Committee should look into a number of issues, including the lack of military response to the events in Benghazi, if any non-military assistance was provided during the attack; the number U.S. personnel who were injured in Benghazi; the current locations of survivors; the names of the individuals in the White House Situation Room (WHSR) during the entire 8-hour period of the attacks and was a senior US military officer present.

“As veterans from all aspects of Special Operations, we have no doubt that there’s a lot more to what happened in Benghazi than President Obama and his Administration are letting on. From the very beginning, he has attempted to mislead and outright lied to the American people about why the attack on September 11th, 2012 happened, how it happened, and what our government did or did not do to save the lives of our patriots abroad,” former Navy SEAL Captain Larry Bailey wrote in a statement to Breitbart News.

The representatives from the retired military community want “a full accounting of the events of September 11, 2012,” adding that the, "American public be fully informed regarding this egregious terrorist attack on US diplomatic personnel and facilities. We owe that truth to the American people and the families of the fallen."

UNOFFERED APOLOGY ACCEPTED
.................................................................................

Posted on Friday, April 19, 2013 2:26:37 PM by Lazamataz

When the Boston Marathon terror bombs ripped through the flesh of innocent victims, killing three and maiming more than one-hundred and eighty, the American Pravda Press was quick and eager to assign blame. Scarely had the flow of blood been stemmed, and barely had the shrapnel stopped moving, when these propagandists -- acting on utterly no information whatsoever -- attempted to pin blame on the political right:

Something these quick-draw gunslingers seem to forget is that the truth will out. And it has. The truth of the matter is that the two bombers, brothers, were Chechyan Islamic Extremists. They had utterly no connection to anything politically right-of-center. One, however, did profess his love of Islam on a social media page:

And while we are on the topic of analyzing the motivations of terrorists, we have some indications of the motivations of another terrorist this week. Paul Kevin Curtis, accused of sending letters containing the deadly poisin 'ricin', posed by his bumper sticker, which states he is a Christian and a Democrat:

So, we can successfully deduce that -- for the largest two incidents of terrorism in this week, and in the case of the Boston Marathon Bombing, the first open-air bomb that is similar to what Israel must endure -- the perpetrators are not only not on the right, but in one case, appears to actually be on the left.

The American Pravda Media, who has slipped so thoroughly into a Soviet-style propaganda role, will never offer an apology
to those of us on the right.

Therefore, I will forcefully wrest one out of them, using pliers if necessary, and by physical strength alone.

I accept your unoffered apology, American Pravda Press.

The Media Owes Boston an Apology--why have American journalists chosen to embrace Islam and defend it to the hilt
.....................................................................
April 19, 2013 by Rusty Weiss

In the April edition of the Blaze Magazine, the question was asked of the media, why have American journalists “chosen to embrace Islam and defend it to the hilt against any perceived form of defamation”?

The fact that we haven’t answered that question twelve years after the murder of thousands of innocents on September 11th, shows that we have failed to deter the American media’s anti-American agenda. And by extension, we have failed the people of Boston.

And for that, we owe the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing a sincere apology.

Nowhere has our failure to hold the American media accountable for providing cover to our enemies been more prevalent than this terrible week.

Completely devoid of facts, liberal journalists set out to respond to the terrorist attacks as being perpetrated by right-wingers, conservatives, or Second Amendment supporters.

We were told it was right-wingers marking the anniversary of Columbine, or the birthday of Hitler.

We were told it was anti-government groups upset about Tax Day.

And we were told it had to be a “right-wing nutjob”, marking the location of the original Tea Party.

What the media failed to do however, was to identify radical Islam as a possible suspect.

As details of the suspects are slowly revealed even as we speak, the willful attempt to cover up the role that radical Islam plays in this and many other attacks on our country border on the criminal.

We are learning that one suspect was a “ very religious” Muslim.

The other suspect, according to his social media page, held a world view in the eyes of Islam.

They posted videos sympathetic to al-Qaeda on YouTube, an account which included a subscription to a channel titled ”Allah is the one”.

All of this had to be a massive shock to the media, who despite their willingness to point fingers at the right, were unable to bring themselves to explore the possibility that radical Islam could have played a role.

But the media corruption doesn’t stop with politically correct coverage of these radicals. The masking of even the most minor of negative coverage toward radical Islam in today’s media complex is astounding.

As Andrew Breitbart once said, media bias isn’t just about “the things that they report inaccurately”, it’s also about “the things they fail to report”.

Earlier this month, the Associated Press set about erasing the term ‘Islamist’ from the minds of their readers for fear that the term was becoming “a synonym for Islamic fighters, militants, extremists or radicals.”

Last September, Newsweek had the audacity to use a cover photo which showed an obviously enraged group of Muslims, accompanied by the title ‘Muslim Rage’.

‘This should not be!’ the media puppets announced, as this was an act of grouping all Muslims under the umbrella of rage, and was therefore Islamophobic.

Nevermind the fact that the image was of Islamic protests being caused by a faux excuse for the Benghazi attacks. Nevermind that enraged radical Islamists had just murdered four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens, in Libya.

Rather than focusing on the real issues here, the liberal media has done everything in its power to avoid pointing the finger at radical Islamists.
They seek explanation and understanding for why a particular group of people are prone to terrorist attacks, without ever naming that group.

And in the end, none of these false justifications for violence throughout the Middle East, and most recently on the streets of Boston, are acceptable.

The rage and the terror are predominantly perpetrated through the prism of radical Islam. The rage has been consistent and perpetual, and it has long been evident prior to Monday’s attack.

While we continue to fight over words and labels, pointing fingers at innocent groups of people, extremists continue to point their RPG’s at our foreign diplomats, storm our embassy walls, burn American flags, call for beheadings and public hangings, and on and on. Now they bomb our very own streets. All the while, the media criminally continues to whistle through the graveyard.

Anyone that points that out is immediately labeled Islamophobic.

That said, I would like to propose a change in how the media labels things of this nature. I’d like to redefine the term Islamophobia. The phrase, much like the race card, has been overused by the media and has been played out. It has outlived its usefulness. It no longer sticks as a term of bigotry or intolerance toward radical Muslims.

Instead, the meaning should revert to a more literal translation – Islam-phobia.

The phobia involves those in the media continually capitulating to the radicals and terrorists killing in the name of their religion. The phobia involves Democrats who continually bow down to the unreasonable demands of terror-linked domestic organizations such as CAIR, or the ICNA, and are willing to release known terrorists in a foolish attempt to establish peace.

The phobia equates to fear. That is why liberals refuse to stand up to radical Islam, and it is why the media refuses to accurately portray the level of rage being executed in the name of the tenets of radical Islam. They are afraid.

No more.

Journalism is a profession. Stop acting like amateurs. Stop being Islamophobes.

At some point, you will have to grow a spine when it comes to the threat of radical Muslim rage. At some point, you will have to stop pussyfooting and tiptoeing your way around the subject matter. In the end, at some point you will have to address reality, and not continue to long for some fantasy world that exists only in your minds.

Until we hold the media’s feet to the fire on this, we will have failed the victims of the Boston bombing. We will have failed the victims of the Iran hostage crisis in 1979. Those killed in the World Trade Center bombing in 1993. At the embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998. With the USS Cole bombing in 2000. At the Fort Hood massacre in 2009. And of course, September 11th.

We will have failed them all. And for that, we owe them a sincere and humbling apology.

Is Obama Covering Up Saudi Role In Boston Bombings?

Investor's Business Daily
Posted 18 April 2013, 06:50 PM ET

Could it be happening again? Could a Saudi terror cell be behind another major U.S. attack? And could the Saudi government be trying to sink the investigation?

After 9/11, the Saudi ambassador demanded the evacuation of dozens of Saudi nationals, including bin Laden kin, before the FBI could properly question them. He got his wish, even though 15 of the 19 hijackers were Saudis and others had ties to the plot.

Eerily similar high-level intervention is taking place in the Boston bombings case. Consider this timeline:

Jan. 14, 2013: President Obama meets in the Oval Office with Saudi minister of interior.

Jan. 16: Homeland Security Director Janet Napolitano signs "arrangement" with Saudi minister bestowing "trusted traveler" status on Saudi student visitors, shortcutting normal security screening procedures.

April 15: Saudi college student Abdulrahman Ali Alharbi is seen near the Boston marathon finish line with two other Saudis. He's tackled after fleeing the scene of one of the bombings. Authorities question him.

April 15: FBI agents search Alharbi's apartment, leave with bags of evidence. He's described as a "person of interest" in attacks.

April 16: Secretary of State John Kerry secretly meets with the Saudi foreign minister, locking out reporters who initially were told the meeting would be open.

April 16: Saudi ambassador phones several papers and insists neither Alharbi nor any Saudi nationals are involved in the bombings. Saudi officials visit the well-connected Alharbi at a Boston hospital.

April 17: Officials clear Alharbi, who's reportedly related to al-Qaida Gitmo detainees, as a person of interest.

April 17: FBI ID from photos and videos two Mideast-looking men with bags scouting scene of bombings and circulate them among law enforcement. AP, CNN and even Boston Globe report one arrest has been made. CNN describes suspect as "dark-skinned male." Media swarm Boston courthouse for arraignment.

April 17: Obama has sudden unscheduled meeting with the Saudi foreign minister at White House.

April 17: Justice Dept. scolds CNN for arrest report. FBI cancels press conference. Courthouse bomb scare.

April 17: Terror expert Steve Emerson reports ICE has been ordered to "deport" Alharbi for "national security" reasons, out of reach of FBI questioning.

April 18: Napolitano denies Alharbi will be deported.

Did the Saudi minister request diplomatic-level immunity? Did Obama sign off on a "voluntary" departure?

"The level of coincidence required for the Saudi kid Ali Alharbi to be at the Boston Marathon at the time of the bombing and near the finish line where the bombs went off is staggering," a DHS official told IBD.

Why was he there? Was he cheering on someone running in the race? We don't know, and if he's allowed to leave the country, we may never know.

Congressman: 'Five Jihadists Have Reached Their Targets in the United States Under Barack Obama'
4:40 PM, APR 24, 2013 • BY DANIEL HALPER

Congressman Tom Cotton took to the House floor "to express grave doubts about the Obama Administration’s counterterrorism policies and programs":

"I rise today to express grave doubts about the Obama Administration’s counterterrorism policies and programs," said the freshman congressman from Arkansas. "Counterterrorism is often shrouded in secrecy, as it should be, so let us judge by the results. In barely four years in office, five jihadists have reached their targets in the United States under Barack Obama: the Boston Marathon bomber, the underwear bomber, the Times Square Bomber, the Fort Hood shooter, and in my own state—the Little Rock recruiting office shooter. In the over seven years after 9/11 under George W. Bush, how many terrorists reached their target in the United States? Zero! We need to ask, ‘Why is the Obama Administration failing in its mission to stop terrorism before it reaches its targets in the United States?’”

Report: Federal Judge Compromised Investigation By Prematurely Mirandizing Tsarnaev

....................................................................................................
breitbart.com/Big-Government ^ | 4-25-2013 | John Nolte

According to a Fox News, FBI officials were "stunned" when federal District Court Judge Marianne Bowler arrived at the hospital and read Tsnarnaev his rights. Sources told Fox News that this premature action might have hurt the investigation. Apparently, prior to Judge Bowler reading him his rights, Tsarnaev was cooperating with investigators. The arrival of public defenders and the Justice Department, though, compromised the interrogation and now the belief is that "valuable intelligence may have been sacrificed as a result."

This is not the first time the Obama Administration has been criticized for its rush to award a terrorism suspect the right to remain silent and to hide behind an attorney. On Christmas day in 2009, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab (aka The Underwear Bomber), attempted to blow up a plane with plastic explosive hidden in his pants. Using the Public Safety Exception, Abdulmutallab was interrogated -- but only for 50 minutes.

After being read his rights and receiving medical care, Abdulmutallab chose to remain silent.

Freshman Congressman Tom Cotton (R-AR) delivered some thought-provoking comments on terrorism and the Obama administration on Wednesday during a speech on the House floor. “In barely four years,” he said, “five jihadists have reached their targets in the United States under Barack Obama.”

But he wasn’t done there.

“In the over seven years after 9/11 under George W. Bush, how many terrorists reached their target in the United States?” he added. “Zero! We need to ask, ‘Why is the Obama Administration failing in its mission to stop terrorism before it reaches its targets in the United States?’”

Here’s the video:
