Toss a rope! These lifeguards can't swim

City recruiting on basis of race rather than skills

In a case of affirmative action run amok, a major U.S. city is looking for lifeguards based on race rather than on life-saving abilities.

The city of Phoenix is recruiting minority lifeguards for its 29 public pools, even if they’re not strong swimmers, reports NPR.

“We will work with you in your swimming abilities,” said the city’s Melissa Boyle.

Colleague Kelly Martinez explained to NPR: “The kids in the pool are all either Hispanic or black or whatever, and every lifeguard is white,” adding, “and we don’t like that. The kids don’t relate; there’s language issues.”

Most of Phoenix’s 500 lifeguards have come from parts of town not located near the city’s public pools.

So, in an effort to attract more minority lifeguards, Phoenix raised $15,000 over the past two years for scholarships to its lifeguard-certification courses. Recruits who pass a swim test can apply to become lifeguards.

The recruitment effort was begun by Becky Hulett, who supervises aquatics for the city of Phoenix.

When Hulett learned the reopening of eight pools last summer meant she would have to increase the lifeguard staff from 330 to 500, she decided to try a different approach to recruitment.

“We read in aquatic newsletters and magazines, there’s articles saying — you know, we as an industry are failing in this,” she said. “And how do we accomplish making lifeguards more diverse?”

How about that Jobs report.? Hopefully one day we will have a normal economy again and not one that is propped up by the Fed buying the treasuries. Just print money around the world, with the exception of China and maybe a few others.

"This article is a complete lie, I would not expect this from even the Washington Post. The cuts to medicare and the reduction in what is covered and how much would be paid are part of the ACA and were implemented a few months ago. How do I know, my wife works for a clinic, when the cut in payments came (Unannounced) they had to start turning patients away. When the reduction in what is treated came again unannounced they had to stop taking patients. The really sad thing is the insurance companies followed the lead of medicare and did the same. Many seniors are now denied health care they were receiving just a few months ago. The post and this writer should be ashamed of printing such bold faced lies."

The Sequester Wasn't Even A Cut!Posted by John Stossel | March 06, 2013

Those terrifying sequester cuts sure haven't crippled America. This week in my syndicated column, I point out that if you look at all government spending, the sequester wasn't even a cut.

That may surprise you, since President Obama likened the sequester to taking a "meat cleaver" to government, causing FBI agents to be furloughed, prosecutors to let criminals escape and medical research to grind to a halt!

The media hyped it, too. The NBC Nightly News said, "The sequester could cripple air travel, force firefighter layoffs -- even kick preschoolers out of child care!"

The truth is that the terrifying sequester cuts weren't even cuts. They were merely a small reduction in government's planned (SET ITAL) increase (END ITAL) in spending. A very small reduction.

And a reduction that doesn't even address our biggest problem: the coming bankruptcy of Medicare.

My fellow baby boomers and I rudely refuse to die, and we want all the cool new stuff modern medicine invents. We expect it to be free, or nearly free, through Medicare.

Unfortunately, there aren't enough young people to pay for what we'll collect from Medicare. Birth rates are falling. Young people in America now don't have enough babies to replace themselves, let alone enough to become workers to fund Medicare. Worse, many of those young people learned bad lessons from us baby boomers -- like how to be parasites.

One student from California State, Northridge told my viewers that his plan for the future is: "Beat the system -- take out a bunch of loans, and don't pay them back. ... What (else) are you going to do, work?"

Well, someone has to.
