Very true on gold. What I've noticed, though, is that gold has a stabilizing influence on my portfolio. It goes up when stocks go down and vice versa. My bonds have been acting similarly. So that gives me comfort that I'm insulated from a major stock crash.

As to optimism versus pessimism, I agree with you on that. Truth be told, I am a notorious optimist outside of these threads. In my work, I'm the guy that takes on the hardest problems and usually succeed at solving them. But I do so by being relentless in my review of the data and shining the spotlight on the reality of things so they can be fixed. To some that comes across as pessimism. To others, it exposes the flaws in a system that must be addressed to get to a solution. In my work, I've been extraordinarily successful at solving problems and the rewards from that will enable me to retire early.

So I am applies the same thought processes that made me successful in work to the problems I see in our economy. To solve problems, we must first acknowledge that we have a problem. Alcoholics who attend AA know this. So I'll continue to shine the spotlight on the problems that must be fixed, even though at this moment in time, it is very unpopular to do so.

Just remember this. When I was exposing Bush and Cheney in their lies and corruption, I was very popular on this very thread. Now that they are gone and irrelevant and I'm doing the same to this administration, the ideologues don't like it.

I'm not a partisan person. I'm a problem solver, first and foremost. I am practical and want to see practical solutions. For me, it has never been about party loyalty, which I have none. It has always been about country first. This is still the greatest country on earth and we still can be a beacon of light for other countries, if we decide to lead responsibly. In the last decade, we haven't seen much in terms of principled leadership in this country.
