Quick Japan Market Survey:

I went to a few major electronics shops in Kyoto today to check out what flash media is now the most popular. Let me warn everyone that I have not read through the thread, so a lot of this may have already been covered.

I talked with sales guys at two shops and both told me that Japanese camera makers were heading in the direction of Smart Media rather than Compact Flash. The reasons given were:

1. Compact Flash is expensive
2. Smart Media is compact
3. Smart Media will soon have a floppy disk holder that will allow the media to be read in desktop PC floppy drives.

I questioned them about Smart Media's limited memory capacity, but they seemed to think that 8Mb allows one to "take enough pictures."

Based on the info I saw today, Smart Media does appear to be in more cameras than Compact flash. I saw both devices, and Smart Media appears to have less than half of the thickness and weight of Compact Flash. Smart Media is AMAZINGLY LIGHT.

Summary of info:

WEIGHT:
Compact Flash heavy
Smart Media light

COST:
Compact Flash expensive
Smart Media cheap

SIZE:
Compact Flash thick
Smart Media thin

CAPACITY:
Compact Flash high (up to 30Mb?)
Smart Media low (up to 8Mb?)

Smart Media seems to have the upper hand in Japan, and may be heading to the U.S. soon as the Japan market is probably 6 months or so ahead of the U.S. in terms of Japanese electronic gadgets. However, I still have doubts about the small capacity of Smart Media. I would prefer to have plenty of memory.

I look forward to everyone's feedback. No flaming please, I am just trying to portray what I saw today objectively.

Good luck...
