re: COP

I read a Seeking Alpha article ( SA article link) today on the gap.

Thinking about it. I could bring CVX up to a full weight and open a 2/3's weight position in something else.

Re: COP & PSX
(keep in mind the stock splits and spin offs when looking at total gains)

So does that mean "to replace" completely close out your position? Also does that include the shares of PSX they recently spun off (or did you already sell those)? One of the things I have learned from investing (in general) is it is not an all or none game. It means you have to be right at least twice; on the Sell and on the Buy. For COP pre May 2012, you have to be right four times.

So when you arrive at a decision to Sell, (1) is it always all or none? and (2) do you first try to find a (dividend) replacement candidate and/or (3) do you ever consider just holding the cash (ie. parking the cash in one of these CEF funds that pay monthly) until a candidate stock presents it's self.

FWIW I was reviewing my top holdings and COP was the big winner for the last five years. It was not from the accumulation of dividend payments during that period but from the appreciation in the stock and from their PSX spin off in May 2012. I continue to hold both and because of the size in the portfolio due to growth, I may have to peel off shares in PSX to keep it from becoming too large of a one stock position.

Notice the "green" portion at year 2012. This represents the PSX spin off May 2012.
COP had the following stock splits too: Splits: Jul 5, 1985 [3:1], Jun 2, 2005 [2:1]

The PSX spin off will have been one year in May. Up almost 100%!

If you consider "splits" and spin offs as part of that dividend growth, they all add up to some very nice gains.
