If you try to kill something as your people have done with Amtrak, you can't expect it to be at the same level as planes and buses.

If all the inter-city rail subsidy opponents shifted to your side and then well beyond, become the most enthusiastic supporters of such subsidies ever, you still couldn't expect it to be on the same level in terms of cost effectiveness or flexibility as planes and buses, its a matter of the economics and the physical reality of rail.

Despite all the obstacles posed by your people, train ridership is growing.

From a small base to a small result, and also after declining for a long time, all while being heavily subsidized.
