While I share the suspicions of those who fear "Big Brother," I can't think of any reason why the IRS shouldn't be allowed to data-mine this information.

I do think privacy laws ought to be beefed up so that the government cannot legally obtain info you volunteer to any website without a court order. That way, the IRS cannot arbitrarily demand, for example, that Amazon give up the data it has on your purchasing habits.

On the other hand, I do think anything you post publicly is fair game. That includes Facebook posts, Tweets, and even posts on this forum (which is why I wonder why some of the trolls on this board say what they say).

This does bring up the need to vastly improve data security and privacy across the Internet, though.
