Check out the following October 17th article. May indicate why the LU offer was at $35 and why ASND wanted $40. LU made the offer at around October when ASND was trading around $33-35. ASND didn't want to be taken out for a couple dollars higher than its current price. Which is why they held out for $40.

As for Short Interest, what is bullish is that ASND has not traded above $26 and a fraction for the whole month of November. Lots of shorts probably piled on at that price and lower.... now they're trapped.

NEWS: Ascend <ASND.O> up as buyout rumor surfaces
NEW YORK, Oct 17 (Reuters) - Shares in Ascend Communications rose in morning activity on Friday amid market rumors Lucent Technologies Inc <LU.N> was exploring the possibility of buying the company.

According to the Wall Street Strategies newsletter, the strong performance today by Ascend shares -- as tech stocks were suffering broad losses -- was linked to the buyout rumor.

A Lucent spokesman declined comment on the rumor as a matter of company policy. A spokesman for California-based Ascend was not yet available to comment...
