>Except that liberals have been lamenting how the rich have been getting richer.

Right. What's your point? Obama made the tax code slightly more progressive like four months ago. Other than that, taxes have been on a less progressive trend for the last 50 years, particularly since Reagan.

>Taxes are very progressive. 95% of all income taxes are paid by the upper 50%. 50% of all income taxes are paid by the top 10%.

But what percent of the income do they make? And what percent of the wealth do they have?

>I argue that the progressive tax code is actually growing the gap between rich and poor, not shrinking it. This is because it punishes the primary means to get rich without having to speculate or "win the lottery,"

Which are what?

>while few people make their way out of poverty by becoming dependent on government.

Very few people want to become dependent on government. Most people do it because they have no other choice -- age, disability, lack of job opportunities... Yeah, some do, but they live on a few hundred bucks a month. It's not much of a lifestyle and you're talking a couple of percent of the population. And likely if they had something better to do, they'd be doing it.

>Like I said, there's no evidence that taxes are effective in redistributing wealth. Really, none.

The wealth gap decreased significantly when taxes were higher and increased significantly as taxes were decreased. Do you need numbers or will you just spout some platitude if I give them to you?

Oh, taxes are effectively redistributing the wealth, Ten. Making the wealthy wealthier for the last thirty years.
