Even ASIC-based systems can't deliver bitcoin at that level.

It really isn't about computer engineering. It is about computational power and the cost to deliver it. ASIC is the cheapest way to do it, but I don't think it can be done profitably at this point. There is about $10M in new bitcoin mined monthly (at today's exchange rate), and that is spread over all the systems doing the mining.
