Out of hundreds of people I've known in the mining business over the past 35 years only one invested in gold. He used to carry little ounce ingots in his brief case when the price of gold was around $1000 and held onto them as it slid back down to $300. The majority of the mining people invested in oil, cattle, farms, ranches, restaurants and apartment buildings.
