I can't see how productivity could possibly be up, given that I'm
spending my time surfing the net and trading stocks, and trying
to catch up on this thread... :)

Michael: just a thought: most employers create demand for stocks by offering "free" stock purchase with the 401K plans, and offering stock instead of bonus and salary to keep wages down. In a company with limited shares outstanding it drives the prices up. So buying of pension plans contributes a lot to demand. We may not see a downside to the market until unemployment goes up.
