It's a question of correlation. I do not know the linkage between sales in CompUSA to sales elsewhere. Perhaps they have nothing to do with each other. But it is a change from past history, and a negative one at that.

If the correlation is zero, then Dell may be doing just fine. I would guess that the correlation is somewhat above zero.

As for DELL's inventory, remember that inventory build up is a symptom. If demand slows, your inventory goes up until you slow down production. If you have an efficient just in time system with no inventory and demand slows, well, guess what, you still have to slow production.
