I agree with your reasoning. I'd just add that it is not only "overleveraged longs", who sold the stocks, but many other traders who will be spooked for quite while with any new development.

Raising the margin requirements is not a small potato, but COMEX/London Fix physical default will play as the support for gold.

Also makes sense this close to options expiration that prices will be held around these levels or lower thru this Friday. Again let's see what happens to physical supplies at these prices. Thus far if the stocks are leading it's still looking like more downside awaits.
