I am somewhat familiar with the Chechen issue, and it certainly seems to me that the Chechen issue is mostly based on resentment towards Russia.

Human rights abuses on the part of the Soviets and the Russians were widespread and brutal. The Chechens were no saints, either, but seemed focused on revenge against Russia. The Beslan (sp?) incident made the Chechens no friends.

What the Russians did to Grozny was brutal.

Until last week, it seems that the US was more or less insulated from what appeared to be a local issue.

I suspect that the Chechen/Russia conflict will ultimately be determined to have been irrelevant to the Boston bombings. There is no reason for it to be relevant. Islamism is probably the culprit.
