An Open Letter to Nate Bell and the NRA

I wonder how many Boston liberals spent the night cowering in their homes wishing they had an AR-15 with a hi-capacity magazine? #2A
— Nate Bell (@NateBell4AR) April 19, 2013

The above tweet emanated from the fingers of Arkansas state senator Art Bell during last night's seige in Watertown, MA, as the week of insanity that had started with the bombs at the Boston Marathon wound down in a hail of bullets, grenades, bombs, and, ultimately, the death of one young terrorist and the wounding and arrest of another.

The people of Boston are reasonably outraged at this.

So should we all be.

I certainly am.

Dear Mr. Bell and all you simpering catamites of the NRA:

The wingnut right, the tinfoil hat crew, the plywood shack set, the ignorant and the willfully ignorant, all urged on by the NRA and the cowardly US Senate, have been begging for weapons of every sort to be kept available to anyone eight to 80, blind, crippled or crazy, because that is the ONLY WAY WE CAN KEEP OUR FREEDOMS. Whatever the hell that means.

For Mr. Bell, who seems both from his photograph and his tweets to be what William S. Burroughs once characterized mercilessly as a "frog faced, red necked" idiot, for the NRA (in particular it's resident draft-reject-based-on-emotional-problems, Wayne LaPierre), and for ALL the idiocracy out there who do not understand what words like "Constitution," "Second Amendment," "rights," and especially "freedom" mean, a primer. Please excuse the big words.

The suggestion that "Boston liberals" (and residents of Watertown, where the actual gun battle took place), and anyone else, anywhere in the general vicinity last night, were "cowering in their homes wishing they had an AR-15 with a hi-capacity magazine," can you imagine what sort of chaos would have erupted had those people been armed with combat-quality weapons and the stupidity to use them? Can you imagine how many (more) innocents would have been massacred by the blind firing into the darkness? Do you really think they should have sent the police home so that they, ordinary men and women, could go out with military grade weapons and try and find and blow away the one surviving suspect? Have you given that scenario even a moment's thought? Really? REALLY? Because that's how FREEDOM is defined? And that's how we manage to keep our guns which of course are our only important freedom? So let's see what that looks like when even two halfwits decide to overthrow the governement or just disrupt an American city street.

Kind of like that. That's the people who protect our freedom and our safety in our houses and our persons. You wanna take that on?

B-b-b-but...they want to take away our FREEDOM!

Listen Bubba, I got news for you anti-government, anarchist, racist, homophobic, hate-filled, never-been-out-of-town bigots who pose as Americans, wave the American flag, and run your ignorant-ass mouths about FREEDOM and GUNS all the time. I'll say it once:

FREEDOM DEFINED IS FREEDOM DENIED.

That's what's in our Constitution and all them laws and books and stuff. We are NOT free to do any damn thing we please. Our freedoms are defined, and so our ultimate freedom, with which some of us obviously could not be trusted, is DENIED. The law tells us what we are free to do and what we are NOT free to do. The framers of the Constitution, who ya'll are always trying to quote (out of context, but half the time you don't even get that right) drew it up that way. Yep, our FOUNDING FATHERS. They drew up some laws for us to live by. And those laws, my friends, tell us where our FREEDOMS STOP.

That's what we celebrate every 4th of July, you halfwits. The denial of ultimate freedom in exchange for a social contract we can all live with, which, though it is in no way based upon it, very much resembles true Christian, Jewish and, yes, even Muslim values (except of course that Islam forbids the charging of interest, so the rich can't get richer at the expense of the rest of us. Go figure).

So the next time someone suggests that maybe guns should only be in the hands of sane, non-criminal type people, and since ya'll have already explained that insanity thing ad nauseum, the next time you decide THIS is a good idea...

...TRY to bear in mind how much room you need to take off and land one of these things, let alone fire a Bushmaster. And you might also try to remember that if you ever really DO decide to try something remotely like launching a second Civil War or otherwise overthrowing the US government, one of those things in that picture there could well be headed toward your cave.

Meanwhile, the rest of the civilized US of A will rely on the people sworn to protect us from the likes of you. They look like this:

So please...for your own safety...don't come to Boston any time soon.

Just sign me

A Boston-loving American Southerner

< Had they gone without finding him, criticism would have become intense and FoxNews, what with the Boston liberals, would have had a field day.>

You're probably right...it would have been a field day. But they didn't have their field day for the following reasons.

- any military large scale operation has two fundamental components....the first is you have to be thorough and disciplined in your plan. Block by block clearing is both tedious and scary work - these guys combed through an extremely densely populated area (you're familiar with it). The actual site where the boat was I think was just beyond the technical perimeter they had established.

- and second, there is always something marginal and random that will make a huge and complete difference...flat ass luck..change in the wind and you smell something, you hear something, or see something or somebody.....in this case, a guy saw something in the boat...the salient point is that infrastructure was already in place enabling the enforcement officers to react quickly and arrest him.

- yes you can call it luck.......but as you know, you gotta make your own luck. These guys sure as hell did that.

- and I , along with you, couldn't give a flying cluster fuck what fox gnus thinks.

There will be enormous implications and learning that will come from this tragedy.

Love that dirty water....
