This was the Rennaissance late 1500s the puritanical monk Savonarola is itinerant preacher who later becomes an inspiraton for the protestant reformation & Martin Luther was an impressive part of the series . They develope his character from the Bonfires of the Vanities, his contempt of the Borgia Pope, his morality youth corps patrolling the streets of Florence in their little monk robe "hoodies" chastening everyone to propriety in dress & speech. There's also the appearance of Machiavelli who's also part of that scene when the Borgia Popes ruled , cynically observing this clash of dawning science & reason with superstitious passion prophecies preaching to repentance, a fun interlude. We don't get much into the Medici's , this is centered around Rome but do get to see King Charles of France who imagines himself the King of Naples so goes on a little exscursion thru the penninsula with the first train of artillery seen up to that time. Savonarola ses the French as sent by God to purify Florentine corruption.

Fine line between doing God's work & heresy so he was tortured & hanged for denouncing clerical corruption, despotic rule and the exploitation of the poor, where did we hear this story before. The world have its monastic puritans & passionate prophets but people also want their Mardi Gras & games , a few festivals & celebrations of military victories national security.

Theres was a time the games were the games of the mind & philosophy, very educated disciplines, writing of divine insipired poetry & visions of social utopias, politics & nature, in endless debates of defining & redefining the lines of proper moral code & conducts by men who devoted long yrs in almost manic devout reading & study. But also a time when when there was no medicine or dentistry or the sightest knowledge of the nature of matter, it was still all an imagined world , so their love art, marble sculpture & architecture.

And a time that the great plagues & dark ages were just becoming a memory but always still haunting.

A hundred yrs before Savonarola in Italy is the poet philosopher Petrarch a monk who becomes the rock star of rock stars for the Renaissance to come in the 16th century. Living in the time of the Plague his poetry is set to music that's sung later for the next 200yrs with joy on everyone's lips , the most universally loved spirit of his age, nobles treated him as returning royalty or a king..

Since few knew how to read & write and there's no one around to match his original thinking Petrarch imagines himself carrrying on dialogues with the Roman poet Cicero which makes him known as the Father of the Renaissance & Humanism. The story of his giving up being a priest on a Good Friday after the sight of a woman we know as "Laura" and later the famous set of poems dedicated to her made him the rock star poet philosopher equal to or greater than Dante.
