While the president of Apple Japan did say that they expect to ship about same number of Macs in the coming year as the last, I do not take that as meaning that the outcome (revenue) will be much better in Japan. To me at least the reason behind the weakness in Japan remains fuzzy. Optimistically we can say that it was due to the short term economic problems there that resulted in a contraction of demand, but my fear is that it's the result of further erosion of Mac market by Wintel machines.Since the cause is unclear I don't know if there was anything that Apple could do or has done to solve the problem.

I do believe G3 machines will draw a lot of diehard Mac users in Japan to buy new Macs. Ultimately that may be the key to improve the numbers in Japan. But remember G3s won't ship in Japan until the end of Dec. Mini tower G3s won't ship until Jan. Thus it probably won't make much of a difference there this quarter.
