OF COURSE YOU CAN. BUT that's not what I said, and the implied accusation that I'm wrong is tacky at best.

The new vehicle index is just one of the many sub-indexes that make up CPI-U, etc. The BLS series number is CUUR0000SETA01, for the NSA data.

Its value in Jan 1970 was 52.7, Jan 2013 was 145.99 - FAR from 6X, and in reality almost exactly the 2.77x as I originally posted.
Actual average new car prices are up 8-9X since 1970, per various sources like energy.gov.
