He came to that conclusion after he was denied citizenship because of an arrest.

I think Tamerlan Tsarnaev developed an anti-American sentiment well before that. Apparently he was pissed about Afghanistan and Iraq, but so were the vast majority of liberals in this country.

The arrest was for domestic abuse. According to his father, he "hit his girlfriend lightly," which probably means he smacked her rather hard but not hard enough to leave any evidence.

According to this NYTimes article, his application for citizenship was held up (not denied, mind you) due to "red flags" raised by an FBI interview back in 2011:

Later on the FBI concluded that he didn't pose a threat, but Homeland Security left open the application for "additional review."

His friends said he started to change after the arrest in 2009.......dropped out of school. Gave up his dream of boxing in the Olympics. He clearly had anger mgmt issues. I think he had problems well before but they didn't manifest until 2009. I think the whole Islam/Chechen makes good copy but I don't think it played as big a role as some want to believe. I think he was one messed up guy from a messed up family who decided he wasn't going any where and wanted to do something memorable. And he did.

BTW the younger one is sounding more and more like a sociopath.
