I want them to know I have one in my home. I don't "carry" one but if I did I don't believe I'd want that to be public knowledge. But there's a BIG difference in my neighborhood and the apparent neighborhood of that old man you mentioned. In HIS neighborhood a gun would probably have more "innate" value than in mine. That's a big part of NOT wanting to flood the whole country with guns. In urban areas kids are getting killed by gunfire while sleeping in their beds.
