Congressional Leaders Want to Opt-Out of Obamacare

Thursday, 25 Apr 2013 11:18 AM

By Lisa Barron

Congressional leaders from both parties are reportedly discussing ways that lawmakers and their aides can avoid having to participate in Obamacare health insurance exchanges.

According to Politico
, the talks involving the White House, House Speaker John Boehner, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, and other congressional leaders have been going on for months and are extremely sensitive, given the potential for political fallout.

The talks were apparently prompted by concerns on Capitol Hill that the provision in the law requiring lawmakers and congressional staffers to join the exchanges could cost them thousands of dollars in new healthcare costs, which could force many staffers to leave their government jobs in search of higher-paying employment.

Various proposals have reportedly been submitted to the Office of Personnel Management, which will administer the benefits and decide whether and how lawmakers and their staffs will be covered. One proposal exempts lawmakers and their aides, while another exempts staff members only, reports Politico.

Michael Steel, a Boehner spokesman, told Politico that the speaker’s goal is “to spare the entire country from the ravages of the president’s healthcare law,” explaining, “He is approached daily by American citizens, including members of Congress and staff, who want to be freed from its mandates.”

“If the speaker has the opportunity to save anyone from Obamacare, he will,” added Steel.

But by excusing themselves from a key component of the controversial 2010 Affordable Care Act, leaders on Capitol Hill could face a backlash from both the public and other politicians.

Congress already is taking heat from the public over the sequester and other issues. By writing themselves and exemption to Obamacare, Politico noted that lawmakers could be seen as holding themselves to a different standard than the people who elected them.

Is an Obama Cover-Up In Progress on the Marathon Bombing?

from Power Line by John Hinderaker

(John Hinderaker) Many commentators have criticized the Obama administration for prosecuting Dzhokhar Tsarnaev criminally, which entailed giving him Miranda rights and providing him with a lawyer. But apart from the wisdom, in principle, of promptly commencing a criminal prosecution in this case, the sequence of events raises obvious questions about what the administration is up to.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was captured last Friday evening. At that time, his condition was described as critical. He had been shot multiple times, had lost a great deal of blood, and doubt was expressed as to whether he would live. Nevertheless, by Monday morning, the administration had decided to proceed immediately with a criminal prosecution, and a brief preliminary hearing was held at the terrorist’s hospital bedside. The hearing was attended by two federal prosecutors, three public defenders, a federal magistrate judge, a court reporter and a doctor. I wrote about the hearing, which I described as “bizarre,” here, and linked to the transcript of the hearing. The magistrate judge explained Tsarnaev’s rights to him; Tsarnaev’s lawyer said that he had met with his client “very briefly.” Tsarnaev himself said exactly one word, which was necessary to get his lawyer officially on board. Further proceedings were adjourned until the end of May.

At about the same time that this hearing was announced, an unnamed “law enforcement official” told reporters that law enforcement personnel had already interviewed Tsarnaev on Sunday evening:
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the Boston Marathon bombing suspect, has told investigators that the deadly plot was self-contained, involving only he [sic] and his brother and did not enlist the aid of terrorists or groups overseas, according a law enforcement official.Tsarnaev, who was arraigned in his hospital bed Monday on charges of using and conspiring to use a weapon of mass destruction resulting in death, has responded to some questions by interrogators. …Dzhokhar, who has injuries in his throat and tongue, has responded to questions about the attack by writing down some answers or simply nodding. His condition was upgraded from critical to fair on Tuesday, according to a statement by the U.S. attorney for Massachusetts. In his limited responses, Tsarnaev said that the two brothers acted alone, said the official, who asked not to be identified because he is not authorized to speak publicly about the case.

So, via an anonymous leak, we are being told that, at a time when Tsarnaev was still in critical condition and unable to speak, investigators interrogated him–just long enough, apparently, to get his assurance that no one else was involved in the plot. Having gotten that non-verbal representation, as we are now told by the anonymous spokesman, the administration promptly got Tsarvaev a lawyer and, in effect, told him to shut up. As was, of course, inevitable, news reports tell us that Tsarnaev fell silent once he was read his Miranda rights.

Now, it may well be true that the Tsarnaev brothers acted alone; my own guess is that it is likely. Further, as I have said before, I think the significance of a foreign connection is overrated. But there is no question that it would be convenient for the Obama administration if no ties to foreign groups, or to other extremists here in the United States, came to light. This is especially true in view of the fact that the elder Tsarnaev was known to both the FBI and the CIA and had been entered into the terrorist suspect database.

It is possible that Tsarvaev may someday provide a fuller explanation of the events that led up to the marathon bombing, perhaps as a condition of a plea bargain. But for the foreseeable future, at least, the Obama administration’s decision to go the route of criminal prosecution guarantees Tsarnaev’s silence. Which means that, at least for now, all we have to go on is the administration’s assurance–based, apparently, on a shake of the head–that the brothers acted alone. This assurance, which seems laughably tenuous, has nevertheless been reported by every news outlet in the United States.

We trust that there will be a transparent investigation into the marathon bombing and that the facts will be fully and openly disclosed, without undue delay. But if the Obama administration wants to obstruct the investigation and prevent all of the facts from being known soon, if ever, it is off to an excellent start.

Pentagon Blocks Troops' Access to Southern Baptist Website
from Breitbart

As first reported by Fox News’ Todd Starnes, Pentagon leaders have blocked soldiers’ access to the website of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC). The SBC is the largest Protestant denomination in the United States with 16 million members, making it the second-largest religious denomination is the entire country after Roman Catholicism.

The SBC is also the largest evangelical Christian denomination in the world.

Starnes reports, “An Air Force officer told Fox News that when he tried to log on to the website he received a message that his Internet usage was being logged and monitored for trying to access a blocked site.” An Army officer was likewise denied access, with the message, “The site you have requested has been blocked... due to hostile content.”

This example of possible censorship of religious beliefs comes on the heels of an Army officer’s email, previously reported
by Breitbart News, warning soldiers to keep a watchful eye on devout Christians. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel was recently pressed about the email by Rep. Randy Forbes but provided no answers.

“This is another example of the growing hostility toward evangelical Christians in the Armed Forces,” claimed retired Lt. Gen. Jerry Boykins, now executive vice president at the Family Research Council. “Ironically, the very people who are sworn to support and defend the rights provided in the U.S. Constitution are being denied the right to exercise those rights individually.”

Lt. Col. Damien Pickart insists the Pentagon is not intentionally blocking access for Southern Baptists but has not provided any official explanation for the multiple reports of the military blocking access to Southern Baptist material. On its face, this looks like a brazen show of hostility by the Obama administration against devout Christians in the U.S. military.

April Ratings: Fox Dominates, MSNBC In Free Fall (Chris Hayes Hit Hardest)

from Breitbart Feed

We won’t know for a few months if this is a short-lived phenomenon based on the Boston Marathon bombings or a permanent viewing shift based on something that is as of now unknown. But for the month of April and for the first time in two years, in both total day and primetime, CNN handily beat MSNBC.

Fox News, however, beat both of them combined.

The April total day average for CNN was 638,000 viewers. MSNBC only reached 406,000. Fox News enjoyed an average of 1,223,000 viewers, which is more than both CNN and MSNBC combined.

The April primetime average broke down this way: CNN: 920,000 viewers; MSNBC: 682,000; Fox News again beat both combined with an average of 2,016,000 viewers.

In the 25-54 demo (which matters most to advertisers, but has nothing to do with national impact), Fox was still in the lead, with CNN not far behind. MSNBC, however, lagged a distant third.

The most humiliating news for MSNBC is that in the wake of the most devastating and dramatic terrorist attack on American soil since 2001, quite incredibly, the network saw no increase in its ratings over this same time last year. In total day, there was a double digit decrease:

Compared to April 2012 MSNBC was down -10% in total viewers and -1% in adults 25-54 in primetime. In total day, MSNBC was down -4% in total viewers and was flat in the demo.

A month into his new primetime show, Rachel Maddow Jr. Chris Hayes is thus far something of a dud, "down 18 percent in total viewers compared to last year’s program in the 8 p.m. slot, The Ed Show."

Hayes also placed last in the 25-54 demo.

Could it be that MSNBC's decision to stop being a news channel in favor of becoming talk radio with pictures and smug hosts, has finally run its course? When liberals relished reassurance and confirmation bias in the wake of the Tea Party victory in 2010 and Obama's push for re-election in 2012, MSNBC's left-wing programming made sense.

But what good are pointy-headed leftists who all look alike when the real world intrudes?

Not much, apparently.
