21st century. benefits of being able to keep margins of restoration above gum tissue has benefits of proper cleansing and maintenance of good periodontal(gum) tissue long term, and denseness should not be a problem if occlusal(chewing) surface is balanced to evenly share the pressures brought to bear between the opposing teeth.

My dentist does crowns in the office while you wait. I had one a few years ago and since he knew I was interested in such things, says, "Come here -- I want to show you this."

They had put a blank in a small milling machine, it took about 20 mins to mill a perfect crown. Very cool. He had a pen-sized scanner that scanned the area where the crown needed to fit.

Eventually, the dental lab will be history, I suppose.
