Bullshit. We were holed up in our fire bases. Leaving them was inviting ambush. We weren't losing, but we weren't winning either. Over time we likely could have cut the causality rate. But all that would have done is slow the bleeding rate. And then there was the issue of the psychological damage to the troops who were at the pointed end of the stick. Most who were there saw little or no action. But those who did saw it most of the time. Most of them were never the same. Even those who managed to integrate back in still carry the war with them. We easily could still be there, running troops through the meat grinder just so we wouldn't have to admit we can't win.
