Why Democrats turned on the segregationists .... because so many blacks moved to northern cities, they became the newest urban ethnic bloc the Democratic machines organized. Today, Dems are doing the same thing with Hispanics ... the Democrats goal in both cases is to keep them poor, uneducated and living in urban ghettos where the machine can control their votes.
