Ah....but they didn't use a "fake" SS. You were the victim of an identity theft, which is completely different.

I am sure a lot has changed, but when I was a practicing CPA we would commonly have employers who worked Mexican labor. When we would do their quarterly reports, it wasn't uncommon for five or six employees to be using the same SSN.

At the time, you could to any local flea market and have SS cards printed up with the number of your choice.
