Say what YOU will, far before 2008 it was clear to to many that the coming downturn would be between depression and horrific and it was unstoppable. You can pretend that presidents are all powerful Oz type figures that can build or destroy, but simple history of economics shows otherwise.

The most important function of a president is foreign affairs and as a figurehead... it's not hard to see that Obama may very well be a better choice than McCain or Romney assuming those two actually meant the things they've said on the topic. Regardless of what they would have actually done, the statements they both let stand by themselves and some nutbags in the party lost them those elections. When the party purges the nutbag contingent that has become prominent it can sweep elections.... Without that it will continue to to disintegrate.
